While South Africa boasts the largest gambling industry on the African continent, a growing wave of anonymous online casinos is raising serious concerns among industry stakeholders.
In a recent Mail & Guardian opinion piece, responsible gambling organization Izmu warned that so-called “no-KYC” casinos, which allow users to gamble without verifying their identity, pose a major threat to the integrity and stability of the country’s regulated gambling sector.
What Are No-KYC Casinos?
Unlike licensed operators, no-KYC (Know Your Customer) casinos bypass standard identity checks, meaning users can gamble without providing ID, address verification, or proof of age.
While this anonymity may appeal to users seeking fast and discreet gambling, it creates an ideal environment for:
- Fraud
- Money laundering
- Underage gambling
- Exploitation of problem gamblers
“Without KYC, there is no barrier to fraud, other crime, and exploitation,” warned Izmu founder Mduduzi Mbiza.
A Growing Criminal Risk
Mbiza described these platforms as “hotbeds for scams and financial crime.” Unlike South African operators that follow strict regulations, such as age verification and anti-money laundering protocols, no-KYC platforms face little to no accountability.
These platforms often:
- Operate offshore
- Rely on cryptocurrency transactions
- Offer instant payouts and inflated bonuses
Some anonymous casinos reportedly handle over $1 billion in monthly wagers, contributing to a global crypto gambling market that reached $8 billion per month in 2025.
Unregulated Growth Threatens Legal Operators
The rise of anonymous gambling is creating an uneven playing field for licensed businesses in South Africa. Legal operators must comply with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA), which mandates identity verification.
However, enforcement is falling behind the rapid expansion of offshore no-KYC sites.
Izmu warns that if the problem continues unchecked:
- Public trust in regulated gambling could erode
- Governments may impose broad restrictions
- Even compliant, legitimate services could be impacted
“Championing no-KYC platforms risks fuelling crackdowns that could shut down even legitimate services,” said Mbiza.
The Call for Stricter Oversight
As global trends shift toward verified digital identities in gambling, South Africa risks falling behind unless regulatory bodies step up enforcement and adapt policies to the digital age.
Industry experts agree: The combination of online anonymity and gambling creates a dangerous mix. Without decisive action, the country’s once-leading gambling market could face long-term reputational and financial damage.
