South Africa Launches 24/7 Online Support Group for Gambling Addiction Help and Recovery
In a significant step toward addressing gambling-related challenges, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has launched a new online support group under the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP). This initiative provides continuous gambling addiction support and gambling addiction help for individuals seeking recovery, fostering healing and meaningful connections.
Since its inception, the group has supported over 400 participants, many of whom joined quietly while struggling with shame, stigma, and isolation. What they discovered was a welcoming community inspired by Ubuntu, the African philosophy of shared humanity: “I am because we are.”
“Our support group is more than a resource—it’s a lifeline. By embracing Ubuntu, we remind participants that healing thrives in community,” said Sibongile Simelane-Quntana, Executive Director of SARGF. “The courage to say ‘I need help’ is met with immediate understanding from peers who truly get it.”
24/7 Support, Wherever You Are
Accessibility is at the heart of this programme. The group uses WhatsApp for 24/7 text support, allowing participants to reach out any time, day or night. In addition, weekly sessions on Microsoft Teams offer a safe, structured space for open discussion and mutual support.
This virtual setup removes the physical and emotional barriers that often prevent people from seeking help. Whether in a remote village or a major city, anyone with a smartphone and internet connection can access the programme.
Participants share personal experiences, coping tools, and encouragement. There’s no pressure, only empathy.
Backed by Policy and Demand
The group also integrates with the National Gambling Act of 2004, offering connections to legal tools such as voluntary self-exclusion and third-party exclusion. In the 2024/2025 financial year, SARGF processed over 4,000 referrals, including 902 self-exclusion requests, a clear sign of growing demand for structured, compassionate support.
Real People, Real Change
Anonymity plays a key role in the group’s success. Members are not required to share personal details, which helps remove judgment and stigma. This sense of safety has encouraged more people to open up, stay committed, and begin the recovery journey.
Some participants have now abstained from gambling for six months or more. Others report rebuilding family relationships, regaining control of their finances, and, most importantly, feeling hopeful—often for the first time in years.
These stories underscore a vital truth: recovery is possible, and no one has to go through it alone.
A Scalable Model for National Impact
Buoyed by its early success, SARGF is looking to expand the programme. Plans are underway to develop regional hubs and collaborate with local communities to ensure the support reaches those who need it most.
By merging technology, culture, and human connection, the initiative is setting a new standard for gambling recovery—and possibly, for other areas of mental health.
This is more than a support group. It’s a blueprint for compassionate, accessible care in the digital age. With the backing of public institutions, private partners, and committed individuals, SARGF is delivering a clear message: help is just a few taps away.
For hundreds already, and for many more to come, this digital lifeline offers a second chance, and a way forward.
